As it turns out... my mother got the dentist apointment date a week early..
It's next week.. so I was sweating the whole day for nothing..
But the wait makes it even worst...
Hand Rendering is fricken hard I tell U...
I've been so spoiled by Computer modelling...sooooooooo spoiled!!!
Hand rendering takes real skillz and vivid imagination...
I've been working on a study case on varies designs on a chef's knife handle...
I did a bunch of renderings.. and after doing it for the first time today...
I've found deep.. DEEP RESPECT for my mom's mad skillz...
As I said before... Erasering of any sorts is totally impoossible
so every stroke by marker, pencile or pen has got to be have it's purpose...
Whether to illustrated shape, form or shading... a stroke must be applied with a purpose...
One stroke without thinking and that ends the drawing... NRRRR!!! start the damn thing all over...
So I've been training myself like mad..
I must da gone thru quite a bit of drafting paper in one day.. markers too...
Why is Hand-Rendering so important...
might I stress again...
for an Industrial Designer...
Hand-Rendering is the key "weapon" in coneptual communication
Everytime my mom goes for a design meeting with a "undisclosed" company to launch a new product line...
She just bring her head = ) with 2 shades of pencils, one jet black & titanium white pencil crayon, 4 shades of professional color markers, and a large amount of 120" x 20" drafting paper....
From that she draws a photorealistic conceptual representation of a finished electronic product....
Because a company decides on the spot whether they would want to invest a 8 million dollar project that could bring in 300% in profit for the company...
Hand-Rendering is FAST, PRECISE and VIVID...
It all depends on the designer...
AND OF COURSE!!!!!
THIS ALL DEPENDS on the fact that the designer is possesses innovative ideas to begin with...
If all U could do is draw and not have creativity behind the designs... then it does absolutely nothing...

I have to go to a place where most ppl hate to go to tomorrow...
My Dentist.. Vicient Wong up North at Hwy 16 and Bayview Ave...
Mind U, He's pretty much the least painfull I've had in my life...
But a dentist is still a dentist... it's still nerve wrecking and torturing...
But one of the things I had to do coming back to TO was a Physical Check-up and my Dentist Appointment
I had skiped my dentist appointment for quite some time... due to work and stuff of course.. ahem ahem...
Neways, I'm looking forward to it...
Today, me and my family went on a test drive frenzy...
Audi Cross-Country, Saab Sport Wagon, Volvo Cross-Country, Subaru Forester, BMW 3 & 5 series Sportwagon....
In the end, the Volvo XC was my choice, for the versatility and $$
I just find the Volvo wagon to be beautifully made then the other competition that seemed inclined to add a extension to their sedan model and call it a station wagon or sport wagon...
It was quite fun... me and my dad scared the living crap of those unfortunate car sales manager who decided to tag along with us in the test drive...
Me and my dad's idea of a "test-drive" is quite a "testosterone-fueled" rocket ride...
So reving the engine to do 0 - 100km and 90 degree cornering gave those 3 sales people a scare...
One sales guy was like "please... slow down.. maybe I could interest you in another car like a S6 Avant... and maybe U could drop me off and have more time to drive by yourselves..."
I was like "no, we love for you to come along, hee hee"
We had the Air conditioning blasting, but I can see the guy sweating like mad... and grabed the hand rail so tight I thought he was going to leave his hand molding on it...
So that was an absolutely fun and entertaining afternoon... could be better if the weather was cooler, so then I could test drove a saab 9-3 convertible or the BMW 330Ci
Just for the kicks of course... = )

plans in store for this week...
Thursday I have a band practice with Justice Kao..who is having a concert
Justis's concert website gives some details to the event [check it out]
We had a practice last Thurs.. and man was I rusty... 2.5 months had totally ruined my skills on guitar..
But I was asked to play lead guitar for him... I was honored and couldn't declined...
So I've been trying to train and work back at the skillz of what I remembered before I left...
My old band mates have also wanted me to play for them some time on mid Aug...
I finally saw a bit of calus forming at the tip of my finger... but I need more...
My finger speed also had improved exponentially...
so now it's up to some technical stuff and some hardcore skillz that I have to work back...
As for my portfolio...
For this week....
I'm learning the ULTIMATE Industrial Designer TRADE SKILL
The Lost Art of HAND-RENDERING
U be surprise at how "Crucial and VITAL" it is in Hand-rendering for a Industrial Designer...
From a mass production of a pilot project in a Palm PDA to a $125 000 Ferrari
ALL these Million dollar projects begins from the concept stage of a HAND-RENDERING...
Hand rendering is a very dynamic hybrid between Mechical Drafting with stylistic 3 Dimensional clor rendering of varies color media [professional markers, chalk, pens]
It's DAMN HARD and offers NO margin of error... meaning Errasers of any sorts are FORBIDDEN
An Industrial designer has to not only be innovative in his designs, but also able to express them clearly and quickly...
Computer modelling and rendering takes too long and not practical if specific changes are asked to be done and viewed on the spot...
Hand-rendering is the quickest and most effective to date...
It's been done back in the 70s and still today...

Been a while sinc my last update... been so busy..
anyways, I've began cramming to learn Rhino3D
It's a program mainly for Industrial Design 3D Modelling
It's going pretty well, frequently check out my portfolio under 3D Modelling for stuff that I'm working on...
Other things I'm doing... Yan Can Cook and some more stereo designs...
I'm trying to force myself to model under Rhino... have to try to model more details with organic and complex shapes...
I've received work on the Yan Can Cook Knife... the plate stamping on the knife was a sucess yey!!
The story behind this knife was to produce a cross-breed btw a French Knife with a Chinese Chef's knife
So it's smaller than the conventional Chinese Blade... more easy to use for home chefs = )
I found it absolutely easy to use, well balanced, light, and EXTREMELY SHARP...
Martin showed me couple tricks with the blade... He loved it too = )
So with the blade on it's final stages, I can rest assure and finalize the packaging...
A "dummie" is being made to be approved by Martin next week... since he's off to Napa.. he travels more than a commercial pilot I tell U...
I might be itching to load Maya 4 and fool around with it.. but maybe I should just master Rhino first...
I hear everyone is going War Craft 3 like mad... and have been asked to play on line...
all I gotta say is, it screwed me on one of my school term.. not going back there again...
Well, I really miss California, It had really showed me alot of untapped opportunities that I haven't really explored yet..
If I had discovered so much in the past 2.5 months... Can't wait to what it'll be like if I was there FOR REAL...
It's going to take alot of sacrifices and struggles if I'm to chase after my dreams...
But coming back to TO seems like weird for some reason...
because after seeing what's in the potential outside of Canada, it seems really backwards coming back...
I start thinking if TO would really be my home.. and I started to reflect...because my whole life had been full of travelling...
It's a luxury that few ppl have, but it's also a struggle while growing up with all the travelling..
TO is basically the longest time I'm been in one place...
But ever since I landed at the TO airport, had this real sad feeling
Somehow.. I think this stay in TO will me the last of many years that I would be here
because the profession of Industrial Design demands that I travel and learn as in all facets of this field...
The industries in Canada just doesn't possess enough econimical resources to support such a demanding field...

alright... something to write then..
while flying back from San Fran
Just my luck.. I had a woman with a bad history of 3 triple by-pass decided to go thru a heart attack beside me
Good thing there was a nurse that specialized in Cardiology so that assistance may be provided..
Getting the Oxygen to the woman and keeping her pulse in check was consistent and stressing thru out the flight
She was then accompanied with the the medical personal when we landed in TO
Good thing we didn't have to detour to somewhere else for medical emergency...
Neways I'm back as I said, and man is it sticky itcky nasty here
I'm really dislike by all the nasty weather here
2 months in Cali seems like 2 years for me for some reason'.
For some reason, I really felt like I "belong" in Cali...
There were tons of stories, and I mean "tons" of stories I haven't time to talk about
hopefully now that I have more time here... I'll able able to share them..
I got to surf one last time before I left..and did a BB pellet Gun war [like paint ballm except with pellets..hurts a whole lot more.. so more realism]
Neways.. I got a program loaded in my sweet computer...
It's called Rhinoceros.. a professional Industrial Design Program.... Extremely Amazing and Dangerous...
Needless to say.. I am hooked....

I'm home and good to be home...
I miss Cali already
the weather especially...

well well...
I'm off back to Toronto
It's bittersweet that's for sure... truely bittersweet...
Hopefully get my portfolio organized for submission...
Caifornia is truely an amazing place...
I have had more contact for more design work here...
I'll have more interviews when I come back here...
Afternoon flights for tomorrow... I hope I don;t leave anything behind... [for all of U that knows how I leave "things" behind]

UPDATE: I'm heading back on the 14th of July...
I'm going to miss California... but I'll be back = )
BUT ON SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY...
yes... something "totally groovy" has happened today that will change my life forever = )
I went SURFING...
How I ended up meeting a surfer who was great enough to lend me a wet-suit and a board will be another story...
but surfing i tell U all... SURFING is like being TOUCHED my GOD?!?!
exagerating? maybe.. but unless U felt the wave energy while riding on the coast water of the Pacific Ocean ... U would think otherwise...
A wave is a pulse of potential energy traveling vast distances across water, so the wave is the energy... DUDE!!!!
Where I surfed was at Half Moon Bay, a secluded beach where the local surfers go. The sweet place behind a beatiful "arch cliff".
The sun was blazzing over the ocean, beaming yellow and orange, like sparkling gold dancing on the horizon...
Here's a few lessons I learned on "catching the waves"...
There is a critical moment when you should NOT catch a wave. Generally this is when a wave has formed into a C and is throwing water forward at high speed. If you catch the wave at this point, you’ll be treated to a new experience: Going Over the Falls.
There are three main flavors to going over the falls. First, you can catch a wave too late, just as it is pitching over, and fall with it into the abyss. Just you and several hundred tons of water falling in a graceful arch to the sea bed. It’s a very jarring experience. Because once you hit, then the whole wave dog-piles onto you. You’ll likely do a little tumbling and rolling under the water. Maybe a flip or two.
The second flavor of going over the falls happens when you fall in front of an arching wave. You hit the bottom, or bowl, just as the wave is throwing a lot of water up. Of course, you take the up elevator too, then U're thrown forward to continue the normal over the falls crash and bubble experience. One wave I caught, I was literally upside down in fetal position as the wave spit me out in a cannonball toward the bottom. I had a lot of time to think over my mistake.
The last over the falls flavor happens to “he who hesitates.” Bigger waves stand up and crash over in roughly the same spot. Sometimes waves just form a mushy slush of moving white water, other times they pick up and drop sledge-hammering tons of water in a hard curtain drop. X marks the spot. Say hey, do you want to be on X-marks-the-spot when the curtain drops?
Neways.. that's how it is..
Surfing was DEFINITELY a SPIRTUAL experience for me...
hope fully I'll have another chance in doing it...
till then... the ocean awaits me....

alright more update...
My game plan right now is to come back and focus on a "formal Portfolio"
I plan on a 20 Page 11" x 14"inch layout
Design Target - > Product Design
4 Product being expressed through conceptual [form], to intermediate [process], to final [production].
Includes artwork or free hand rendering, to Alias and Rhinoceros 3D realistic modelling.
I'm already in the mist of research in terms of what which 4 products I want to present.
Presentation will be judge by form and function. Not just the asthetics, but also the mechanical capabilities in mass production.
It'll be one hell of a ride for me... Can't wait..
I have to wait till I have the final prototype of Martin's Knife in order to finalize for production.
Till then... I can leave and take care the rest of the designs in Toronto.
Yan Can Restaurant opened up last week... in Pleasant Hill, California
It is the first Pilot of many Yan Can chains. Trio contributing project between Yums... Wybridge and Martin Yan....
I'll probably have to present several revision modifications in molding future Yan Can chain restaurants.
Hopefully come back a few weeks...
I'll sure miss the dang weather here... I heard the heat and humidity in Toronto is boiling and steaming...
dAmN !?!?...
another thing... I'm down to 160lbs
FRICK!!! I don't get any more oriental than that...
Worst of all, I never had fat to begin with... I'm lost 20lbs of muscle every year...
i think my weight is now stabalized... this is my "real" weight... without all the 3x per week workouts...
This is what work does to U boyz...
I guess it's better than getting fat when not exercising like how girls are with their "natural" metabolism...
Thank God I survived through the 4th of July here in Cali...
Some crazy shooting episode in LA airport...
but...U have no idea how reluctant I was in going out today...
