MATTHEW MARK!!
the man!!
I did a song 3/4 years ago
It was a "fooling around thing" during a band break...
He was good and so I wanted to see what 'quality' he can do
so in one recording take
I did 1 layer track with acoustic and vocal
then the other 2 layers with a overdubb with an acoutic fill ins, and a classical guitar solo..
It sounds very good, except for my vocal... common!! I wasn't even prepare...
but Matthew is really good at what he does!!!
here!!have a listen

Just when I thought things can't get anymore hectic as I'm totally indulge in the making of my portfolio...
Martin calls and demands the knife packaging be done tonite..
There is a Shopping Network that wants to launch his new chinese chef knifes
So now I sit and await the opperating manufacturing hours in China, so I can start dicussing and sending my art work over...
as well as conference call with Martin at the same time on any minor changes that have to be made...
another sleepless night in Toronto for me...
Hopefully I can finish this design by this week... cause I have one of his bamboo steamer to do also...
I like to have a couple of those chef's knifes..
The above pics shows the recent final prototype of the "Yan Can Cook" knife
AND MAN!!!
it's light and just small enough to be carried anywhere....and oh yeah... it's CRAZY SHARP!!!
hmmm I'm sure Nevin and Gerrome are getting ideas on what they can do with them... "PEK YOI !!!!"

well... 2 days and the concert was over...
It was just sweet music...
I enjoyed every minute of it, practice and concert...
It is always amazing for me to play with a group of talented musician...
but each and everyone of them are a believer of God, and that we all share the same inner passion for music... it's priceless...
I've played in some wicked gigs in my time... but this definitely takes the cake...
Gathering in a huddle circle in prayer, laughter, bonding... and smelling each other before we go up on stage was a first for me...
It really brought in the "chemistry" and connection that we have on stage...
Playing as one and "feeding" off each other was absolutely amazing...
There alot of little moments between me and every single band members that was very memorable...
But it'll be too much to write down..
But one funny episode that reoccurs with a couple musicians I was playing with like Sharron [keyboard] and Mark [drummer], had asked me what they chords to play during a segment or what I could suggest to fill them in for their solos... T
they were quite supprise when I told them to just have no idea since I don't read music...
I think Justis noticed it after a while when the music he gave me was ahem ahem.. untouched
I do read music... I can if I really want to.. but I've always played it from feeling and what it sounds like "on the moment"...
Every time I play the same song, I play it different, my solos are different every time we practice or even on the night of preformance
Saturday night's solos are different from Sunday night..
What was most astounding was that everybody in the band [with the exception of Tim Tang the bassist.. Kick ass by the way] are in study of music in one form or another... whether vocal, folk music, or even music therapy...
Me and Tim are the only ones without formal training I guess...
But we seem to gel really well together...
another note... On the day of SAT.. that was when the ENTIRE BAND got together..
before that we practice in pieces, one vocal would come in one day, and someday another one...
But On the day we came together and was organized and focused enough to execute the performance...
pretty crazy stuff...
Neways.. This concert was a treat and high point of my stay here back in Toronto...
Starting tomorrow [still tired from the concert], is when I really have to start drilling myself in my portfolio development...
I'm writting a time log deadlines on the stages I have to be at in my portfolio...
and it doesn't look good.. it's really compressed...
I have be delievering alot designs and displaying various rendering techniques in a very short time...
I'm pretty much grounded for a while...
more to write later

good to see there are alot of new ppl stepping in the Blogger...
[check the link page]
For someone like me that works on teh computer 24/7
It's great to read during breaks...
I did some hardcore hand-rendering excercises...
To all that have no idea STILL of what hand-renderings are..
I'll scan some in soon enough... have to show it when it's good = P
Hand renderings is basically concept drawing that shows a 3D representation or story board of a product of all angles...
But we're not talking about comics sketches and doodles...
This is Hardcore Professional Pentone Markers, Pen, on Vellum paper...
This is the kinda drawings that are presented in designing meetings to people with the money and slap it on a 2 year investment on a design project...
whether a new concept BMW Z4, or Audio Speaker Tower... IT's all up to that sheet of rendering...
and it has to be quickly produced... 30 min and it has to look LIKE THIS
So, as I have mentioned before, my mom was and is still one who is well known for her designs, especially her hand renderings..
I know this not due to the fact that she kick my ass in hand-rendering, or the fact that she's my mommy... ahem ahem..
BUT!! I know this due to the fact that I was told of how good she is by her fellow designers and industry professionals...
An example is like the CES [Consumer Electronic Show] that I go to every year where all the world's Consumer Electronics industry come to strut their stuff.. Sony to Texas Instruments
Alot of professionals have slapped me on my aching shoulder and telling me what a wonderful mentor I have to learn from in the industry of Industrial design, when in fact she always complains of how I donlt listen to her = )
Neways, back on topic... I tell U this not to boost about my mom
But the fact is that I have a huge shadow to overcome... Living in someone's shadow is extremely hard
I have to live up and excell beyond my mother's reputation and some of U out there may be experiencing the same thing..
It ain't easy, and it's ain;t fun...
My mother aren't putting pressure on me, and warned me of this very early when I decided to pursue Industrial Design all out...
She warned me and told me of what I will face and told me to stay low key till I was ready...
If any of U also know... Listening to your mother for 2 hours is hard, but mentoring under your mother 24/7 is something else...
And with this industry, there is absolutely so much to learn, it;s crazy if I blur it out here.. maybe someday I 'll share more...
But TODAY = )
something my mom was asking me to do that I thought I'll share...
My mom was trying to strengthening my lines and circles in "free-hand rendering"
so she had me drawing liines and circles on newspapers
yeah I know don't laugh!!! She had me layout a bunch of chinese old newspaper [you chinese readers can relate]
and just draw straight lines from the top of one end to teh bottom
and then circles of 90 degrees to elipse of 15 25 30 60 degrees
It was like Karate Kid when the old man told the kid to go "WAX ON and WAX OFF"
I had like a room full of lines and circles on chinese newspaper all over when I was done...
But yeah it improved my free-hand ability...
There's alot of other techniques... But this one tops it all...
Neways, I'm still struggling everyday, but improving everyday also.. which is good

Early afternoon, I was at my dental appointment, doing cleaning for my teeth
Turns out I haven;t cleaned since 98...
and let me tell U... this had been pretty much the worst experience I've had in a long time...
I was like "ouch! that hurts.." and teh guys says..." I know"
Not "oh sorry, I'll ease up"
So it's as if the guy was gold digging on my gums...
Everytime I went to wash my mouth with those rediculous small paper cup
I was spitting blood...
So I decided to play on an even ground...
I decided that everytime it hurts whe he's supposely "cleaning" my teeth but instead "scraping" my gums,
I would pinch his leg that is within arm length distance...
well it worked, he was alot more careful after that...
He was quite limpy while walking me out afterwards..
So try that if the next time U go and have your teeth cleaned...
After that, it was another Justis Concert practice session.. it was very good...
This is going to be an amazing concert...
Normally I don;t promote concerts that I do..
but in this case.. it's really REALLY GOOD!!!
During practice I met Matt Mark... who will be our Sound/Audio Technician
Interesting thing is.. his antie is my God-mother... a very close God-mother of mine...
but the thing is, we knew each other before that..
but somehow, he found out about our "connection", and told me about it...
I was quite thrilled about it...
Anyways something amazing that I saw tonight that I MUST share...
I LOVE !!! SADE
Her music is GROOVY, SHE IS MYSTICAL, and her band is SO SMOOTH!!
SADE is absolutely everything that I love in music...
If my life were to be represented as music... it would be in the music of SADE...
Any of U know what I'm talking about... give me a shout...
anyways.. if U have the chance, go watch that live concert video of Sade [Sony 2002]
It was totally inspirational...

Just came back from a dinner with Martin...
I must say.. I miss going out dinner with him... 'cause it's like eating with a king...
The chefs knows it's Martin Yan, so they try their best to impress him...
He ends up given critiques to the chefs on every dish...
I just eat and nod my head = )
Alright, Canada might host another YAN CAN Restaurant here in Toronto...
The meeting went well, and the Yum Corp. are looking forward in having a expansion of the YAN CAN in Toronto...
R&D are on its way to go forth with the pilot project in Toronto...
Something unexpectingly happened...
While I was face down on my meal = )
I was offered a chance to attend courses for cooking at George Brown...
One of the Master chef who is a professor at the college invited me to attend...
Apparently, you need to be in the profession to enter the courses...
He sees "potentials" in me... ummm... right...
well I said I'll think about it and it does sound quite interesting...
I can choose from a bunch of culinary discipline.... Japanese, Thai, Chinese [of course], Italian, and so much more...
Martin urged me to go... says I'll be able to help him in recipes designs...
I told him I like to eat more than I cook... He told the chef to spit in my soup... = P

Martin is coming to TO for a meeting in regards to a new restaurant concept here...
So I gotta throw something together...
plus.. He's finallizing the knife design and it's packaging...
Crunch time...
I AM SAM... It was a very good movie...
Plot was decent and sweet...
but most strikingly... IF anyone out there are real film lovers and appreciates camera works...
I AM SAM had GREAT Cinematography... EXCEPTIONAL color shots!!!
I'm talking about real great Direction in art and set design...
There's very few movie out there with that kinda quality
Elliot Davis, director of photography did an absolute job in the visual elements of the basic colors,
beautifully rich vibrant color of red, blue,yellow... with dynamic camera works
the shots had alot of life ... follow-up by great editing from Richard Chew...
I love movies this this... I wish there was more like it actually...
Neways... gotta cook up some more designs...
